When to Go

Picking the right time to visit the Omanawanui Track is very important. We guide you to go only on a clear day because good visibility makes the views much better. The wide views of the Waitakere Ranges and the rocky coastline are worth the climb, but clouds can hide them fast. Fog not only blocks the scenery but also makes the already windy track more difficult and not enjoyable.

Track Starting Point

Track Length: 4.8 km/3 miles
Time: 2-3 hours
Difficulty: moderate, there are hills and 2420 stairs
Dogs: not allowed on the trail

The Omanawanui Track may look like just another walking trail, but its starting point has some hidden treasures. Located in the rocky Waitakere Ranges, the area is full of history and special land features that people in a hurry often miss. As you start your walk, take time to enjoy the green plants and the sound of faraway waves, which show the huge underwater volcano that once shaped this land.

Path to Paratutae Island

Midway up the hill, a nice side path leads to great views of Paratutae Island. It takes about 20 minutes to go there and back, so it’s perfect for people who want good views without a long walk. From the lookout, you can see Paratutae Island and the wide Whatipu Beach. Even if you don’t have much time or are tired, this short walk is fun and worth it.

Quick fact: Paratutae Island looks like it’s not an island because it was joined to the mainland in 1989 as sand built up over time.

Among the stories here is the sad tale of the HMS Orpheus, which sank in 1863. The ship, carrying soldiers, hit a dangerous sandbar, causing one of New Zealand’s worst ship accidents and the loss of 169 lives.

From this viewpoint, you can think about the bravery of those on board and how nature shapes history. The rocky beauty of Paratutae Island contrasts with this sad past, showing both the charm and danger of the area.

Path to Signal Station

As you walk the path to the Signal Station on Paratutae Island, the journey itself is part of the experience. The trail winds up a steep ridge, offering amazing views of Auckland and the deep blue waters below. Stairs along the way guide you closer to the top, making it feel like a hidden treasure awaits.

At the Signal Station, the wide views of the city and surrounding nature are a reward for your climb. After enjoying the scenery, you can stop at a nearby café to taste local food while taking in the stunning backdrop. This walk shows how nature and city beauty can exist together, leaving a lasting impression.

On the trig station, many people turn back, but if you keep going, the path rewards you with amazing views of rolling hills and wide landscapes.

As you walk further, the trail passes through beautiful sections of green bush, a clear change from the open sky above. Wooden boardwalks make walking easy, letting you enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.

Hillary Trail

Walk the Hillary Trail by following the orange markers through the green Waitakere Ranges. This 77 km (48 miles) trail goes through different areas, from thick forests to coastal cliffs with waves below.

The full trail is shorter now because of Kauri’s Die Back Disease, but walking smaller parts lets you see many plants, animals, and hidden places like waterfalls and viewpoints. Every walk gives a new view of New Zealand’s beautiful nature, making it a fun adventure.

Heading back to the Car Park

If you keep going from the Signal Station, you can reach the road to the car park, but walking along the road means sharing space with cars and dust, which can disturb the quiet. Going back along the trail is more scenic and relaxing, with the sound of leaves and the sound of the path under your feet.

Each turn may show new views, like wildlife or a wildflower. When you get to the car park, you will enjoy not just the end, but the beauty and sounds of the bush along the way.
